Steamboat Hosts New Boarder/Skier Cross Events

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO- November 12, 2010-Steamboat has long been known as one of the best competitive grounds for skiing and snowboarding, and that tradition continues as the resort welcomes three Boarder and Skier Cross events from January 22-29, 2011, including the only US qualifier for the International Tele Cross Finals.

“We have wanted to do an intermediate to advanced Cross course for a while now,” says Jim Schneider, vice president of skier services at Steamboat Ski Resort. “Courses like the one we are building are an integral part of training the next generation of competitors. We’re thrilled to be able to offer the same experience for our guests.”

The competition schedule includes a USASA Boarder/ Skier Cross (Jan. 22-23) open to all ages and the US Tele Cross (Jan. 29), an open qualifier for the International Finals held in Austria later this season. Additionally, the NorAm Holseshoot Tour (Jan. 25-27) will make one of only three US stops in Steamboat, hosting a Boarder/Skier Cross USSA FIS race. This event is open to qualifying participants and will include some of the best skiers and boarders in the field.

The competition course, which will be built by Nick Roma-Steamboat’s Terrain Park manager and the only American on the 2010 Olympic course design team, will begin just below Jess’ Cutoff and wind through the Mavericks Terrain Park, banking around Bashor chairlift and ending on Giggle Gulch. The course is expected to be 7/10th of a mile with 150 meters of vertical drop, a little longer than a regulation 100 meter course. Racers in Boarder/Skier Cross competitions can hit speeds of up to 35 mph, resulting in approximately 1 minute of competition time.

After the January events, the course will be shortened to include terrain in Mavericks Terrain Park and will open to the public in February for the remainder of the season. Guests can have open competitions with friends and family while whooshing through the twists and turns of the new course.

“We’re excited that Steamboat is stepping up to the plate to build a world-class cross course that will be open to competitors and the public,” commented Jon Casson, Snowboard Director for the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, who is helping to bring the events to Steamboat. “This effort is another example of Steamboat’s commitment to building top notch facilities for skiers and riders to train and compete.”

This year, 25 new rails and features will be spread across the resort’s progressive parks, including The Wall, a 24 foot wide by 20 foot tall massive feature. In addition to the new features, two new staff members will join the Terrain Park team-Taylor Baggott-Park Builder/Designer and Carl Schultz-Pipe Cutter. Baggott brings over a decade of park expertise that spans parks on both Coasts. From just down the road in Breckenridge, Schultz has 7 years of snowcat experience, specifically in parks and pipes, at various Colorado Resorts.

• Labor Day Weekend in Steamboat Springs: Celebration!

The 6^th Annual Wild West Air Fest takes place September 4^th & 5^th at the Steamboat Airport. Vintage air and warbird static aircraft will be on display. Some aircraft will be offering rides. Classic cars and the Wings over the Rockies Kidspace make this a great event for everyone .

If you love dogs, be sure to catch the Steamboat Stockdog Challenge Saturday, Sunday and Monday at the Stanko Ranch.  The competition of these talented animals as they herd sheep is entertaining and amazing.

The Rocky Mountain Bull Bash PBR takes place at the Romick Arena on Sunday. Cowboys’ show off their skills to their limit as they take on top-ranked bulls to compete for a big cash prize.

The Steamboat Springs Stage Race takes place Saturday, Sunday & Monday 8-4 in different locations. 

The Downtown Hoedown and Chuckwagon Chili Challenge  is in downtown Steamboat  Sunday 12-3.

Census estimates show growth in Steamboat

Routt County population increases, but towns’ changes mixed

Steamboat Springs — Steamboat Springs’ population increased more than 2,300 residents, or 24 percent, from 2000 to 2009, according to figures released Tuesday by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The census figures indicated that Steamboat had 12,180 residents as of July 1, 2009. The increase from 2008, 215 residents, or 1.8 percent, follows a trend of consistent modest growth in Steamboat since the 2000 census that showed 9,815 residents.

Jonathan Spence, Steam­boat’s interim planning director, said the city conducts its own population study annually that it compares with state demographers so each can verify numbers. For example, he said the state revised its population figures for Steamboat in 2008.

Spence said the city uses its population study in conjunction with the census estimates for planning purposes, such as development of the Community Area Plan and the West of Steamboat Springs Area Plan.

“We look at those numbers for providing services, such as essential services — water, sewer and emergency services,” he said.

In addition, he said the city’s planning department is working on an inventory analysis to evaluate what residential construction is possible on vacant and unused parcels in city limits. He said that analysis and population figures help Steamboat plan for the future.

According to the census figures, Routt County also grew, from 19,690 as of the 2000 census to the July 1, 2009, estimate of 23,469. That’s a difference of 3,779 residents, or more than 19 percent.

Other Routt County towns saw different changes in population. Hayden’s population has fluctuated since the decade began, and the town’s 2009 estimate increased 39 residents to 1,673 since the 2000 census. Oak Creek’s population increased six residents to 855 during that time, and Yampa had 442 residents as of the 2009 estimate, one fewer than was recorded in the 2000 census.

Colorado’s population in­­­creased by more than 723,000 people, 16.8 percent, to more than 5 million since the 2000 census, according to the 2009 estimate.
